Why replace filters? And why not clean or wash air filters

Heat recovery ventilation filters (HRV filters) are not suitable for reuse. Cleaning the filters may be tempting, but saving costs in this way is not the way to go. This is in spite of the advice from some brands to wash the filters. Dirty filters are full of nasty moulds, dust particles and bad bacteria. Some of these are indistinguishable to the naked eye. So you think your filters are clean after a thorough wash, but instead the air may still be polluted. In order to save costs, it is better to replace the HRV filters with a high-quality alternative, since original - brand-name - HRV filters are often very expensive.

Types of HRV filters

Because houses are increasingly well insulated, a properly functioning ventilation system is indispensable. HRV filters are an important link in the optimal functioning of such a system. With an average level of pollution, it is advisable to replace the HRV filters twice a year. However, if your house is located in the city centre, for example, the filters may fill up a little faster.

Which filters do I need? That question comes up regularly. The answer cannot be given in two words. In the first place it depends on the brand and type of unit you have in your home. f'air HRV filters are available for almost every brand and type of unit. Laws and regulations for HRV filters

Since August 2018 there has been a new filter standard: the ISO 16890. This new standard requires suppliers to specify a number of values for each standard.

  • ISO Coarse - percentage of coarse dust that is retained.
  • ISO ePMI - percentage of fine dust smaller than 1 µm that is captured by the filter.
  • ISO ePM2,5 - percentage of fine dust smaller than 2,5 µm that the filter captures.
  • ISO ePM10 - percentage of fine dust smaller than 10 µm that the filter captures.

Here you will find a complete overview of the rules and laws for filters. The new system is not always clear. That is why the old classes from the old EN779 filter standard are still often used. These are classes G3 and G4 for dust and the like. And M5, M6 and F7 for pollen filters and fine dust filters.
